SPD-1W System Program ( Ver.1.02 )


If You're Using a Mac
If you're using a Mac computer, first carry out the operations described below on the Mac.
  1. Start "Audio MIDI Setup."
    (Use [Applications] -> [Utilities] -> [Audio MIDI Setup] to start this.)
  2. Display the "MIDI Studio" window.
  3. If "SPD-1W" or "V***_SPD1W" is displayed, select it and click [- (Remove device)].
    Numerical values are displayed in the "***" portion.
  4. Quit "Audio MIDI Setup."


How to know the version
Before you start, check the system program version of your SPD-1W.

* Before you start, download and have on hand "UpdSMF (SMF Player)" for the operating system you're using.

  1. Connect an AC adaptor to your SPD-1W.
    * The SPD-1W will not operate on USB bus power.
  2. Adjust the Wave knob to "12."
  3. Adjust the [MIX] knob to "MASTER."
  4. Turn all four of the other knobs (PHONES, MASTER, SENS, and THRES) all the way counterclockwise.
  5. Hold down the [ALL SOUND OFF] button on the SPD-1W and turn the [POWER] switch to ON.
    The TRIG indicator flashes.
  6. Use a commercially available USB cable to connect the SPD-1W's USB connector to your computer's USB connector.
  7. On the computer, run UpdSMF.
  8. Set MIDI Out Device to the connected V***_SPD-1W.
    The current version of the SPD-1W is displayed in the "***" portion. (For example, if the version is 1.02, "V102_SPD-1W"is displayed.)
    If this shows the latest version (version 1.02 or later), there's no need to update your SPD-1W.
  9. Quit UpdSMF on the computer.

Bug Fix
The following bug was fixed.
  • The unit is sometimes not detected by a Mac.


What you will need to update your SPD-1W
  • SPD-1W
  • Micro USB cable (Dedicated charging cables cannot be used.)
  • A personal computer which can run the following SMF players ("UpdSMF")
    • UpdSMF ( SMF Player for Windows )
    • UpdSMF ( SMF Player for macOS / OS X )
  • AC Adaptor ( PSA Series )

Caution when performing the update
  • As long as you follow the procedure, no error occurs during the update with this program. If you fail the update, you can perform the update again.
  • Never power-off your SPD-1W while the update is in progress!
    If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the SPD-1W won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs.
  • We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update responsibly, following the directions given in this document.

Getting the update file
Please open/extract the downloaded "spd1w_sys_v102.zip" file on your computer to get the update file named "SPD1W_APP.MID" in the "spd1w_sys_v102" folder.


Procedure for the update
Follow the procedure below to install the unarchived system program onto the SPD-1W.
* Never turn off the power to the SPD-1W while the update operation is in progress.
  1. Connect an AC adaptor to your SPD-1W.
    * The SPD-1W will not operate on USB bus power.
  2. Adjust the Wave knob to "12."
  3. Adjust the [MIX] knob to "MASTER."
  4. Turn all four of the other knobs (PHONES, MASTER, SENS, and THRES) all the way counterclockwise.
  5. Hold down the [ALL SOUND OFF] button on the SPD-1W and turn the [POWER] switch to ON.
    The TRIG indicator flashes.
  6. Use a commercially available USB cable to connect the SPD-1W's USB connector to your computer's USB connector.
  7. On the computer, run UpdSMF.
  8. Set MIDI Out Device to the connected V***_SPD-1W.
    * The current version of the SPD-1W is displayed in the "***" portion.
  9. Click [ Path ] (click [ Select... ] for Mac) on "UpdSMF" and specify the location where the update file ( SPD1W_APP.MID ) is from SMF Path (SMF Folder for Mac). Then, click the [ OK ] button.
  10. Click [ Scan SMF ] (unnecessary for Mac) to check that the update file ( SPD1W_APP.MID ) is displayed in the file list.
  11. Click Send.
    Sending of the update program starts.
    When "ok" appears on the display, sending of the update file is complete.
  12. When the TRIG indicator on the SPD-1W stops flashing and remains steadily lighted, the update is complete.
  13. Quit UpdSMF on the computer.
  14. Turn the [POWER] switch on the SPD-1W to OFF.
  15. Please verify the version number "1.02" with the procedure described in "How to tell the version" part of this document.
    * If you're using a Mac computer, carry out the procedure starting at "If You're Using a Mac" to check the version information.
